Akon Secures Funding For Solar Power In Africa
Akon has re-focused his attention away from music on the Akon Lighting Africa Company, a passion project he began in 2013, which is to bring electricity to some of Africa’s impoverished rural locations.
The charity effort of his firm has been expanded to Latin America. He’s also established a Solar Academy in Mali, giving engineers the education they need to harness the sun’s power for energy.
Akon his making his dream of solar energy a reality by securing funding from one of China’s largest companies.
Akon lived in Senegal, and his focus on music to solar power occurred when he noticed how political the electricity industry was in Africa. He said Africans would have to build Africa for themselves. Akon said he wanted a generation of doers – people that would make a difference – so he began with himself.
He looked for business partners in China and came up with a deal with the bosses at a major solar power company to use their items to create solar panels in the country. Since that time, he’s managed to bring 16 million Africans electricity, and his goal is to increase the number to 80 million over the next 10 years.
